    Description

Very Rare and original, 1930 “Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association” Booklet being a Roster of all current members and a Report of the 10th Annual Reunion of the organization held at the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch in September of 1930.
The Cherokee Strip Cowpunchers Association, organized in 1920, was open to those who had worked as cowboys on the ranches in the Cherokee Strip before 1893, the year the Strip was open for settlement. The association numbered about 400 members near the beginning. The wives of the members were eligible to join the Ladies Auxiliary. Joe Miller was elected perpetual president in 1921. Upon his death in 1927, his brother Zack Miller was elected as President for Life. The association's official publication, the 101 Magazine, was "dedicated to old-timers and to young people—and to those who love the Great Southwest and the Greater Outdoors."
This very rare Booklet measures approx. 3 1/4” by 5 7/8” and contains 24 pages plus its original, faux leather paper wraps. The Booklet is titled on the front cover “Report / Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association” and sub-titled “Report of the 10th Annual Reunion C. S. C. P. A. September 1930”.
The first 10 pages of the Booklet contain a report of the proceedings of the 1930 Reunion of the Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association held at the Miller Brother’s 101 Ranch on Cowboy Hill.
Cowboy Hill is a one and a half acre piece of land overlooking the Salt Fork River in Kay County, Oklahoma. It was formerly part of the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch. The Hill was given by the Miller Brothers to the Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association as a place where they could gather for their annual reunion as well as a place that any of the cowboys and ranch hands of the Association "could find a place ot rest". It included the Cowboy Hill Cemetery where any member of the Association had a right to be buried - the cemetery contains only 3 graves one of which is that of Zack Miller.
The Report is followed by a two page poem titled “Cow Boy Hill” - an ode to the plot of land and the life of the Cowboys gathered there. The majority of the remainder of the Booklet is an alphabetical list of the 459 members of the Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association along with their place of residence. At the back of the Booklet there are 3 blank note pages.
The Booklet has numerous nostalgic elements that hearken back to the life of those who worked the ranches of the Cherokee Strip in the 19th century. The dedication, written by the Secretary of the Association O. E. Brewster gives an insight into the flavor of the Publication: “Dedicated to the co-workers and the pioneers of the cattle industry of the Cherokee Strip from 1874 to 1893, when every man was a law unto himself, but no yellow was tolerated, where a man had to be a man in every sense and a shirker in nothing. Such intense and strenuous conditions fostered a condition of brotherhood that shall and does last with all who had a share in making the history of that period. If the Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association does this, by organization, than our labors are not in vain”.
This rare and original, 1930 “Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association” Report and Roster is in very good condition. It is bound in its original paper wraps which are intact and sound but soiled and a bit edge worn as can be seen in the scans below. The interior pages are complete and tight with some soiling and scink notations throughout. There is also significant scribbling and ink notations on the blank note pages at the rear.
A very rare and original, 1930 “Cherokee Strip Cow Punchers Association” Booklet being a Roster of all current members and a Report of the 10th Annual Reunion of the organization held at the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch in September of 1930 and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
