    Description

19thC Papier-mâché Lacquer Snuff Box w/Hand-painted Landscape, Stobwasser 1820-30. The base is speckled red, green and gold over a black background, the interior lacquer in red/brown. The lid is painted with a landscape with a number of neo-Baroque buildings in the center which is unidentified at this point; perhaps it is a retreat in the Harz mountains in Germany.
    Dimensions are 9,8 x 5,8 x 2,0cm
A very similar box can be seen in Detvel Richter’s book “LACQUERED BOXES” published in 1989, and further research indicates that these curved boxes were made at Stobwasser’s factory exclusively and those listed on the website ‘WERKVERZEICHNIS DER LACKWARENMANUFAKTUR STOBWASSER UND IHRER NACHAHMER’ shows that these curved boxes, signed or unsigned are all attributed to Stobwasser’s Fabrik.
Condition shows loving use, and as it were made to fit the pocket it was evidently utilized in that way. Still a lovely box nonetheless.
