    Description

Antique snuffbox from the times of the Union of Soviet socialist republics
In Russia, tobacco was introduced into fashion by Peter I, who fell in love with tobacco when he was still a student in Holland. Already under Catherine II, tobacco was not only imported from other countries, but also grown in Russia itself. Tobacco use was a hobby of the nobility, merchants and peasants. Jewelers did not stay away, snuff boxes became even more beautiful and original, even those were created that played a melody when opened. The XVIII century was the real era of snuff boxes. Kings and famous conquerors collected snuff boxes, sometimes the collection numbered up to 1500 copies. This number of snuff boxes is now possible to find only in a large Museum.
A separate outfit was supposed to have its own snuffbox. Snuff boxes were made of almost any materials and metals, often enamel and precious stones were used as decoration. Snuffboxes were even used as a pass to a secret fraternity. So in 1738, the Pope forbade masons to be a member of the brotherhood of "Freemasons", which led to the appearance of secret lodges, which could only be entered by presenting a special pass, a snuffbox with the image of a pug. Snuff boxes were made with a large number of different compartments with lids, for storing different types of mixtures. Snuffboxes could also be used to send love letters and notes. With the advent of snuffboxes, new rules of etiquette came into fashion, so when meeting a friend, it was customary to offer tobacco from an open snuffbox, and the exchange of snuffboxes was considered a very generous gesture.
Tobacco boxes made of gold, silver and studded with diamonds with the Imperial brand were a very valuable reward. The value of the snuffbox was increased by the image of the Tsar's portrait on it.
Getting a gift of a snuffbox sometimes meant getting out of sight. This is how the Marquise de Pompadour got rid of her lover, sending him a snuffbox with Cupid and the inscription "Enough"
. Sometimes the stories on the snuffbox had very interesting explanations, so fishing meant flirting and love games.
From all of the above, we can conclude that snuff boxes very quickly and for a long time gained popularity among all communities of the population and for many centuries remained very desirable items in the collection of every person.
