This is a Fancy, Fine Condition Antique Matching 5-piece set made from dark brown and black candy-striped horsehair. The headstall is double candy striped 1/4" diameter 3 strand twist braided horsehair with (2) two colors red & white chumitiado and black braided leather decorations and (2) two color zig zag braided cord accents. The double strands form a split for the horse's ears at the top of the headstall, so the horse's ears fit between the 2 strands and holds the headstall in place. The headstall is 20 1/2" tall with adjustable with loops on each side with an orange & black cone shaped knot. The sliding brow band extends 7" and is double candy striped 1/4" diameter 3 strand twist braided horsehair with (2) two colors red & white chumitiado and black braided leather decorations, 4 small black leather braided knots and a two-color zig zag braided cord accent with tassel. The bosal is 13" long x 4 1/4" wide with double 3/8" diameter 4 strand candy striped horsehair with 8 braided black leather knots, 3 color braided yarn nose band, and large black braided leather end knot with a small center 2 color braided yarn and a small black leather braided Turks head knot. The mecate is about 10' 7" x 3/8" diameter 4 strand candy striped horsehair with a black leather braided Turks head knot end with an end horsehair tassel. The double candy striped 1/4" diameter 3 strand twist braided horsehair set of reins can also double as a throat latch to secure the headstall at the rear V where the neck and head meet. They are about 59" overall with 14 black braided turns head knots and end horsehair tassels. The bosal set is completely handmade and was used on young horses in breaking them in and getting them used to wearing a bosal around the snout, held in place by the headstall, before a bit was introduced. The mecate is used as a lead rope.
This complete set is from my personal collection; bosal, headstall, browband, reins / throat latch, and mecate; all in excellent, used condition with no damage, repairs or alterations. As expected with all organic material, it eventually dries out and loses some of its flexibility; but this is supple enough so the set could still be used today. The dark color of this set is the natural dark brown horsehair used. Note that most sets do not have a fancy browband, and a set of reins are rarely found as part of a matching set. This set would be great as a wall hanger, decoration, Man cave, Den or conversation piece; or in any cowboy, cowgirl, vaquero, Charro, Charrita, Old West, Western, horsehair, equestrian, Horseman's, Horsewoman's Western Americana collection or Folk-Art display.
