    Description

France circa 1809.   1st Empire officers snuff box.
This is a rare military officers snuff box from the French 1st empire.
The gold plaque is embossed with conjoined portraits of Emperor Napoleon and Empress
    Maria-Louise, in
commemoration of their marriage ceremony carved into very fine burl wood.  The inner lid is tortoise-shell lined.  Around the portraits is a latin inscription which I have tried to capture in photos.  It is hand carved and has a beautiful patina.
There is a wonderful wood patch on the bottom.  My guess,  this was proudly carried or placed on a table.
The snuff box closes but as you can see not tightly on all points.  I suppose,  if I was 220 years old, I would have issues as well.
This has been in my family's collection for over 70 years.
Its time to pass to the care of another.
    Size:
    2.5 inch diameter
    3/4 of an
    inch
    deep
This would be a wonderful gift for the loved one who collects military/snuff antiques.   Tuck it away for the holidays.
