Description
For your consideration, a very fine and very old German table snuff box of brass with an iron oval medallion affixed to the top depicting the Catholic Cathedral Church of St Peter in Cologne and marked "kolner dom". Construction on this church began in 1248 and it is the most visited landmark in Germany. The medallion shows the cathedral as viewed from the south in fine detailed relief. Two rosettes on the sides indicate rivet attachment points. The brass box is rectangular and eight sided and measures 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 1". There is much wear, discoloration, and some corrosion. The medallion has pulled slightly away from the top but is firmly attached. There is a break in the hinge pin. the interior has much corrosion from centuries of use. The top closes tightly and latches properly. My best estimate as to age is around 1750 but it may be older. This is a very special piece in fabulous condition considering its age. Please see all photographs. Priority shipping to the lower 48 is , elsewhere at actual cost. All offers appreciated and seriously considered. Thank you for viewing my listing.
