AMAZING PIECE!!!!
recently discovered in a collection that has not seen the light of day in decades.
many high end important western items were collected over a lifetime and only just recently come to market.
Description:
Stamped / Embossed "W. F. CODY"  ( William F. Cody ) Travel Trunk Case. Made of Stiff Canvas, Leather corners and edges. Cloth lined interior. It has the remnants of shipping Stickers on one side. Based on the
remnants
of one sticker I figured out it's from the
Peninsular And Oriental Steam Navigation Company. (Search google images for the name of that company and the word sticker, you'll find the entire sticker image for comparison). Which is probably the shipping company he used to get to Europe to preform for the Queen.
We took 4 scans of the embossed letters so you can see it in super close up detail and the obvious patina and leather aging that only happends with true age. . The Brass locks say "British Made" on the face plates. This thing is OLD! It has large Brass Tacks on the top and bottom of the trunk. It is a "soft" trunk / case, meaning it is thick stiff canvas sides, top, and bottom.
It isn't backed with wood or metal.
There are copper rivets that have greened up.
Inside the Trunk are brass or copper clips on the top, bottom, and sides. I'm not sure what they would be used for but they seem very specifically placed. I was wondering if it would be the right size for his big hat to travel safely without getting crushed. The leather handle on the top is still in great condition for it's age.
