Antique Snuff Small Wood Trinket Box Austrian Scherenschnitte Under Glass RARE!

Description

This charming antique box is in wonderful condition and is marked made in Austria on the bottom. I am guessing that it is a snuff box because of its size (1 1/4" tall 2" across). Scherenschnitte (scissor cutting, paper in this case) originated in China and was adopted by the Germans, Austrians, and Swiss. The art spread to America in the 1700's. The detailed and very delicate Scherenschnitte of three children drumming, marching below a tree, has been protected all of these years by a glass cover, (the paper has not yellowed like some of the pictures reflect), and the paper is cream in color. The wood appears to be lacquered in black, and there is slight scuffing on the bottom. Just an unusual and lovely box. Refer to the pictures to further assess condition.
