Description
This old, circa 1940, J C Higgins saddle is really a lovely old piece of Americana. I have sat in it, and have found it very comfortable. It is very unusual, as it has a quilted seat overlay, and the seat has tiny scalloped edges. The tooling on this saddle is hand done, and very attractive. It has an overall length of just over 25 inches, but has the rounded skirts that enable its use on many shorter backed horses.
The saddle is solid, ruggedly built, and has seen a lot of use. It does have some faults, so please read the description and look closely at the pictures. The horn is tight, but some of the edge of the front has worn away, and a little of the leather can be lifted very slightly, although it does not move easily. The fenders show a lot of use, but they are double thickness, and made to last. Crazing of the leather surface can be seen. The underside of one of the fenders has a tear near the middle....probably a spur scrape, but it is only on the under side of the fender. The stirrup leathers have had repairs. The Blevins buckles are old, and worn, and one keeper is missing....they should be replaced.
The tree is tight and solid. The saddle is still lovely. The rigging is sound and appears solid. It is double rigged. The lasso keeper strap is good, some of the latigos have been replaced. All are present.
Pretty enough for an Americana display, solid enough for continued use, but would benefit from a little work on the stirrup leathers. This is not unusual for a saddle that has worked for a living.
