    Description

Beautiful historical C. Lauer Queen Victoria Bronze Medal, issued on the occasion of her death in 1901, AE 65. The Medal is 65 mm across, and weighs about 107.8  g.
The medal is scarce - at the time of this posting there was only one other such medal posted on the Web. The Obverse features Queen Victoria Crowned and Veiled and the Lettering around reads: VICTORIA .QUEEN.OF.GREAT.BRITAIN. EMPR:OF.INDIA. Also the the Engraver's mark, CHR LAUER.  The Reverse depicts a reclining female figure, winger, regarding a plaque decorated with the young head of the Queen. The Lettering reads: BORN / MAY 24TH 1819 / DIED / JANUARY 22D / 1901.
Queen Victoria's bust (in the Obverse) is similar to those used by Lauer for other purposes including the several patterns struck in gold with new designs which was submitted in 1887 for the jubilee of Queen Victoria. In the reference book used by PCGS and NGC, English Pattern Trial and Proof Coins in Gold by Alex Wilson and Mark Rasmussen, Lauer's gold patterns for 1887 are photographed. Lauer is famous for designing and producing well known gold patterns for Queen Victoria's Jubilee for Spink & Son in 1887. The highest price recorded for a Lauer Great Britain gold pattern in auction for an 1887 design is a gold Crown (ESC-342A), also pedigreed to the Murdoch Collection of 1904. It realized 5,000 and is considered one of only two known. Also sold in auction was a small 1887 gold 6 Pence pattern Rarity 5 (6-10 known) that was designed by Lauer (W&R #381) which realized over ,000. Also sold in a Heritage auction was an 1887 Victoria pattern gold Penny, also by Lauer, W&R #392 for ,562 with 3-5 known.
Since this design is almost identical to the 1887 gold Crown designed by Lauer for Spink & Son, which realized 6,000 in the Heritage auction, it is believed that this veiled head portrait of Queen Victoria was also commissioned by Spink & Son in 1887. There are no surviving records or documents since there was a fire during World War II that destroyed the Spink & Son records in London.
