This is a Fine Antique, hand-made, silver inlaid & engraved post Victorian Period fancy oval shaped box, by Corke Brothers & Co., circa 1910. In the early 1900’s, almost all men and women used tobacco of some sort, and both Gentlemen and Ladies desired fancy goods. When used as a snuff or tobacco box, it would have been used as a tabletop piece; and when presented for use, the case would be offered with a Victorian flair of hospitality to a friend, associate, or acquaintances. When used as a ring, jewelry, or trinket case, it would have been a personal accoutrement, most likely in the boudoir. Even though these cases were considered a necessary accoutrement, they were also considered a status symbol, and Object D' Art; and were frequently purchased as a gift or for presentation. The escutcheon, or name plate, remains unengraved on this piece. The entire piece is made from thin natural material that was boiled and then shaped while soft. This piece is constructed of a concave bottom piece that is fitted to the bottom inside of the sides. The top is attached with a small, stylized silver hallmarked hinge, with a small stylized cut out clasp at the top edge, en suite. The top is attached with a small silver stand away hinge, a style known from the 18
th
C., with 2 tiny attachment pins in the top and side. There are several hallmarks on these 2 silver pieces, and they are hard to decipher as they are slightly disfigured when stamped on the two small pieces. However, enough remains to determine the C & B hallmark of Corke Bros. & Co. of London. The London city mark is visible, and is known for their high quality, as well as the lion silver mark. The date mark is only partially struck; but given that C & B was only in business from 1904 – 1912, it appears the date mark is P for 1910. The top has a beautiful, highly detailed & delicate inlaid flower and riband pattern that was hand inlaid with a parser tool, or bow fiddle, and then hand engraved. When held to the light, the antique top and bottom panels show their multi-colored rich chocolate / dark tan / golden colors. It is difficult to take images that show the surface that shows the shallow concave shape of the bottom panel. The case has a press button protrusion on the front for releasing the top latch, secured with a tiny pin and the top opens and closes properly. The case has no damage, repairs, or alterations. This lightweight, delicate piece is 3 1/16" wide x 2 1/8" deep x 7/8" tall and weighs only 1.1 ounces or 31 grams. This would make a great addition to any Victorian style, snuff / tobacco box, small ring / jewelry / trinket case, a decorative or smalls collection, or use as a desk accessory, ladies or gentleman's accoutrement, conversation piece, gift, or keepsake.
