FINE, RARE & EARLY ANTIQUE HAND MADE CHARMING FOLK ART
LATE 1700'S - EARLY 1800'S GENTLEMAN'S POCKET SNUFF BOX / MATCH SAFE
RING BOX / TRINKET BOX
This is a Fine, Rare & Early Antique Hand Made Charming Folk Art late 1700's to the early 1800's Gentleman's pocket snuff box / match safe.
In the 18th to 19th Century, almost all men used tobacco of some sort, and the preferred venue for Gentlemen was snuff; finely ground tobacco that was sniffed. This small pocket case was made to carry powdered snuff, which was mostly popular from the mid 1700's to about the mid 1800's, when chewing or smoking tobacco became more prevalent; typically cheroots (long thin cigars), standard sized cigars, or smoked in a pipe bowl. In the late 1800's, cigarettes became more fashionable, although some still preferred snuff, and today there is a resurgence of snuff use. Only a Wealthy Man of means would have been able to afford such a fine personal accoutrement and tobacco accessory such as this. Wealthy gentlemen, gamblers and Military Officers desired fancy goods, i.e., a fancy snuff box that would, when occasion dictated, be brought out of the pocket with great flair, offering a pinch of snuff to their business acquaintances or sporting gents. Even then, these snuff boxes were considered an object d' art, a status symbol for the well to do, and a necessary Gentleman's accoutrement. There are dozens and dozens of different sizes, shapes and materials of snuff box made over this approximately 100-year period when snuff was en vogue and its popularity was at its peak. There were less expensive pocket containers available to the masses in every size and material. Papier Mache` snuff boxes began to be created around the mid to late 1700’s and were in wide use for most commoners until about the mid 1800's. Initially, snuff initially was a "guy thing” and considered improper for women. However, by the late 1700's, women began to exercise their "rights", and began to partake of snuff; in much the same fashion women began smoking cigarettes in the 20th century. This handmade piece dates to the late 18th century to the early 19th century; and is completely hand made in the early, functional, rectangular box style. Similar early pocket containers for toothpicks were also popular and Gentleman's accoutrement at the time. By the late 1700's, snuff boxes began to be made in small oval shaped porcelain pocket containers that were extremely popular and were in general use well into the early 1800's. This small pocket container is about 2 5/8" wide X 1 1/8" deep X 5/8" tall and weighs a scant 23 grams or .8 ounces. The top is affixed by a small handmade brass hinge that is counter sunk in the back top base and secured at the back by 4 handmade brass screws; 2 small flat head screws at the back and 2 small round head screws in the top. The lid has a thin lip across the front of the lid for opening. The lid closes properly and stays closed with a tight seal to the top edge of the base. The top inside lid has a tiny handmade cut out brass L shaped catch affixed to the lid with a small brass handmade screw. This catch has a hole in the front that catches the small brass spring mounted on the inside of the front panel. This spring is simply an L shaped piece of brass with one end affixed with a small handmade brass screw. The slight "spring" is a result of this bracket lying flat against the inside and pushed inward by the small brass pin in the front center of the box that is peened on the inside and held in place by this "spring". This L shaped bracket has a tiny bend at the top that acts as a pin that fits inside the top bracket hole and keeps the top closed, with no warping of the top. The right-hand front panel screw was originally added for aesthetics and uniformity only. As can be expected, there is naturally occurring surface crazing and minor flaking, numerous light scratches and tiny dings to the surface, and a few small areas of flaking to the delicate outside surface; all of which are perfectly normal and acceptable for any object that is 200+ years old. Considering its extreme age, all 4 sides and the top are in excellent condition, with no repairs or alterations. *The bottom surface has an untouched, deep dark patina, as shown. I believe this is the remnants of a black corrugated coating applied so that this piece could also be used as striking surface for a match safe. The now smooth coating was originally rough, and the newly invented phosphorus matches of the late 1820's could be swiped on this surface to ignite; thus, making this box a dual purpose piece used for Gentlemen who preferred snuff or one who preferred to smoke his tobacco. I have only seen a couple of "dual usage" boxes, originally made as a snuff box, and later a match striking surface was added to an existing snuff box; or, the striking surface was incorporated in an earlier snuff box design. Thus, this piece could date anywhere from the late 1700's to the 1830's. The inside appears untouched, with traces of old snuff; and this piece has seen light wear and has been well cared for over its approximate 200-year lifespan. This is a charming piece of Folk Art in untouched, as found, excellent condition overall for its extreme age. This piece was designed as a pocket snuff box that could also have been used as a tabletop piece. This would be perfect for any Folk Art, smalls, snuff, snuff box, match safe or tobacco collection / display; or use for keepsakes / a ring box / jewelry box / knickknacks, or as a paper weight / desk accessory / conversation piece / gift.

SELLER'S RETURN POLICY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EBay customers are protected when they are an eligible buyer, complete a purchase of an eligible item on a eBay's website, and purchase the item on eBay by using the "Pay Now" option, third-party checkout or an eBay invoice in one lump payment with a PayPal approved financial business. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. Improper good faith conduct can include, but is not limited to, any means by which a buyer can attempt to unjustly benefit from the Seller's Terms & conditions or eBay's Buyer Protection plan. Moreover, good faith conduct does not include buyer's remorse, regardless of the reason. Returns will not be accepted such as changed my mind, Found a better price, Just didn't like it, Ordered by mistake, Arrived too late, etc.. Returns will not be accepted and buyers will be reported to eBay when buyer makes false claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller. Due to a myriad of International and U.S. Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s), some articles shipped via U.S.P.S. may have restrictions and / or regulations that may apply to your article(s) shipped to a U.S. address. Buyers are responsible for knowing if any International, Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s) may apply to your article(s) shipped to your ship to your address; and buyers are responsible for any loss if any prohibited or restricted item(s) shipped to your ship to address is confiscated for any reason. Any item returned must be pre-approved by the seller and received by seller within 7 days from receipt. If a buyer claims the item is damaged in shipping, it must send photographic proof on eBays email system, gain agreement with the seller, and item must be returned before buyer enters a feedback comment and before any exchange, credit or refund is issued. Buyer must use appropriate shipping, delivery confirmation and / or signature confirmation (items 0 ) and/or insurance at the buyers expense. Restocking fee, partial refunds and refunds are negotiable when buyers are dealing in good faith.
