    I
call this material 'School Fish'. Here, you see how wild this insanely beautiful world of minerals we live in can be.
Inside richly-endowed quartz, a network of lustrous gold creatures swim beneath the blueish matrix of this showy gem. The top, show face is domed, the back face is flat.
This California cab measures 14.8 mm long, 10.3 mm wide, and 3.3 mm thick. Except to say it's from California's Mother Lode, the exact source is unknown. This is natural, born-in-the-U.S.A. gemstone; exotic even for the Mother of all Lodes. For unique, natural, mineralogical beauty, the gem advertised here is a standout. Photos fail to capture the full aesthetic.
    A
s the operator/sole proprietor of Gold of Eldorado, I actively sought gold in the field for 18+ years. Beginning long ago, in a past life, perhaps, something in the golden mystique of this rare, precious metal attracted me to it. Searching for Au (gold), working with it in it's multitude of forms has become a life-way. This passion has become fuel for an occupation.
If, like myself, you're an avid fan of gold, please let me know of any specific sizes, colors, or cabochon-shapes you might be interested in. I may be able to accommodate you with a custom-made creation.

    MY OLD STOMPING GROUNDS
Sometimes called THE FATHER LODE, the extensive placer deposits filling Trinity County, California began their development by white miners back in the mid 1800s. Eons before these European diggers arrived, erosional forces had lain down gold-bearing sediments on a monumental scale. The ancient lakes and riverbeds which had become this golden repository were subsequently cut into by running water. As down-cutting created vertical or sloping terrain, elevated components of these old deposits were left intact. Most of these gold-bearing formations were subsequently washed down by 'Giants' (hydraulic cannons). The avid 49ers and their salty followers were pretty thorough. It's rare nowadays for a prospector to find ancient Tertiary or Quaternary gravel-beds intact anywhere in the region. If you want to see what remains from one of these old hydraulicing operations, check out the LA GRANGE MINE on Oregon summit a few miles west of Weaverville on infamous highway 299. That must have been quite a lively epoch as argonauts moved in, chewed up the gold-bearing formations, and spat them back out again off the ends of their sluice-boxes.
Mountains of boulders and hundreds of old mining 'cuts' attest to the miner's efforts.
Rich gravel deposits were blasted down over a territorial quadrant
encompassing roughly 50 to 75 square miles. On
an equally massive scale, bucket-line dredges churned up creeks and tore through river-bottoms grabbing the precious metal found near bedrock.
Squeezed in (or squeezed out) amongst these larger operations were the uncountable minions of small-scale, independent miners.
They came rushing in from the four corners of the earth, every cut and color, with picks,
shovels, rockers, gold pans,  and 'long toms'.
Towns sprang up too. The vestiges of a civil, polite society grew out of these gnarly roots of humanity.
In time, miners discovered that  'while poor men work, the rich man keeps all the gold" (from my song, California Fever) Merchants, saloon-keeps, freighters, painted ladies, and resourceful swinders thrived. A few hardy argonauts might have struck it rich, but likely as not only a handful.  Many of them must have made a living, though probably not much of one considering the cost of goods and services. What a colorful era it surly was. Now, with today's astronomical gold prices, look for a whole new breed of adventure-seekers and fortune hunters to be scouring those hills and valleys. You might as well try your hand. Who knows, you might get lucky and find something bigger than 'frogs hair'.
Have you seen God in his splendor,
Heard the text that nature renders?
You'll never hear it in the family pew.
The simple things, the true things,
The silent men who do things,
Then listen to the wild, it's calling you
