    on CBS, and he appeared briefly in the winter of early 1955 on the CBS
    Morning Show
    , filling in for the vacationing Jack Paar. From 1955-1956, Carson
    hosted two CBS variety shows
    , first on Thursday nights then on daytime, each called
    The Johnny Carson Show
    . On September 30, 1957,
    Do You Trust Your Wife?
    , hosted by Carson, premiered on ABC. By July 1958, the show's name was changed to
    Who Do You Trust?
    A few months later, Carson was
    teamed with a new announcer, Ed McMahon.
    On October 1, 1962, Carson left
    Who Do You Trust?
    to
    succeed Jack Paar as the permanent host of
    The Tonight Show
    , bringing McMahon along as his announcer.
    The immensely popular
    Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
    ran on NBC from October 1, 1962 to May 22, 1992.
    Carson became a major national celebrity with his celebrity guests and timely comic monologs. He won
    6 Emmys and many other awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1992) and the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award (1993)
    . His farewell show in 1992 was a national event. A graduate of Harvard Law School,
    FREDERICK DE CORDOVA (1910-2001)
    preferred to work in the entertainment industry, initially in a variety of theater roles and then in films and TV. He
    directed 23 films
    , mostly low budget ones, including the celebrated Ronald Reagan vehicle
    Bedtime for Bonzo
    (1951). A prolific director of TV segments, he
    joined the
    Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
    as director and producer from 1970
    until Carson's retirement. He seated himself on the set next to Carson's guests, just out of camera view but sometimes addressed by Carson. He
    earned 5 Emmy Awards as Carson's producer
    . The son of slaves,
    EUBIE BLAKE
    (1883-1983, born James Hubert Blake in Baltimore, Maryland) met musician Noble Sissle in 1915.
    Together they helped create the Broadway show
    Shuffle Along
    , whose cast included Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson.
    Many of Blake's most famous songs came from
    Shuffle Along
    , including
    I'm Just Wild about Harry
    and
    Love Will Find a Way
    .
    Blake was a frequent guest on
    Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
    .
    Performing at concerts until he was 99, Blake died five days after his 100th birthday.
