    Description

This is a large antique silver plated serving dish from German Empress, or Kaiserin, Augusta Victoria, wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II, luncheon silver service. The octagon plate has a decorative border and the engraved crowned cypher of Kaiserin Augusta Victoria. The plate was made by the French firm Christofle which opened its first branch at Karlsruhe, Germany in 1854. The reason for moving the manufacturing abroad was purely economic, namely, to reduce the huge custom duties on finished goods. The scheme was very simple: the semi-finished product, fully prepared for silver-plating, was made in Paris, while its silvering took place in Karlsruhe.
The dish measures 13 inches in diameter and stands 1 1/4 inches deep. The reverse is marked with the name “Christofle”, the Christofle logo, the Metal Blanc mark, and the number “2077880” with indicates the piece was made in 1904 or 1905.
The dish shows considerable wear and use, but the top retains its silver plating. Overall, the dish is in very good condition.
