Description
Sascha Brastoff Set of Ashtray / Dish with Egg Shaped Footed Jar / Urn style Container with LidMy aunt had these pieces for as long as I can remember, dating them back to the early 60's.
The Persian Arabian Nights theme is depicted with a reclining Genie wearing a hat and harem style pants on the ashtray/dish and the container has two fancifully stylized horses facing one another on the front with the Sascha B. signature, and a freeform flower design on the reverse.
The soft colors are enhanced with the shining gold accents.
These are weighty, substantial pieces. The ashtray/dish measures 8 1/2" x 6", weighing 3/4 lb. The container is 7 1/4" tall and 4 1/2" wide, weighing 1 1/4 lb, including the lid.
Perhaps the Covered Egg Container might have been to hold cigarettes, back in the day. One cannot tell at this point, as there is no sign of that now.
As I have tried to highlight in the photos, the ashtray/dish is in perfect condition, like new, but the jar has two signs of damage. The tip-top piece is missing and there is repair on an area of the lid. Two photos show that area, one from each angle. Please study the photos and request more, if you like.
One photo, looking into the container from a side angle shows a small discoloration that looks like it came from the factory perhaps.
These pieces are intricately designed in a highly decorative Persian motif. Sascha Brastoff was one of the most famous names in pottery during the 1950's and '60's.
He lived a remarkable life, full of creativity in multiple fields of design.
In my research, one reference stated this Sascha B. signature denotes pieces not personally created by him, which would display his full signature and probably belong in a museum, but made in his Los Angeles factory, Sascha Brastoff of California, Inc which operated from 1953 to 1973. Confirming this is information regarding the marks seen on these pieces:
Sascha Brastoff's earliest sketches and ceramics are signed "Sascha". In 1947 (while working solo) he started to sign his name "Sascha B.” This signature went on to be signed by staff members. As a general rule, anything signed “Sascha B.” is most likely signed by a staffer. All original design pieces are signed “Sascha Brastoff”. In late 1953, Brastoff added a back stamp to the underside of each piece. This is a rooster under which is seen a stylized cursive or script "Sascha Brastoff" and below that in all caps the block letter denotation, CALIFORNIA U.S.A. ©. Items produced after Brastoff left the factory in 1962, are signed with ® indicating registered trademark.
The ashtray is marked with the Rooster Logo Sascha Brastoff California USA F2 with the registered trademark symbol.
The container is marked with the Rooster Logo Sascha Brastoff California USA 044A with the registered trademark symbol.
These pieces display beautifully, even with the missing top piece and repair area. I only noticed the missing top on close inspection and the repair area on the lid is small enough to overlook, as well.
